Dorothy Wabisca, nee Chambers (d. 1997)

Dorothy Chambers was born at Champagne to parents George and Sue (Dickson) Chambers. Dorothy went to elementary school in Dawson while boarding at St. Paul's Anglican Hostel and then attended high school and the Yukon Vocational School in Whitehorse. She married Roy Wabisca and they raised five children. Dorothy was a founding member and then an employee of YANSI and went on to work for the newly-formed CYI in 1974. In the late 1970s, she was appointed to a three-year position as the first Native Advisor to the Yukon Commissioner. She returned to CYI in the early 1980s and was elected Western Vice President of the Native Council of Canada. In the mid-1980s, she was elected as CYI vice chair and played a major role in restarting the Yukon land claims negotiations. In 1990, she started working for Champagne and Aishihik First Nations on self-government and implementation issues. Dorothy Wabisca served on numerous boards through her lifetime and was remembered by her use of Churchill's quote to 'never give up.'1)
